auntie’s cookbook

context

chinese immigrants have endured a long history amon american history. through a century, they have established lives, towns and a way forward with nothing in their hands when they moved to this country. and muych of that history was built by chinese women who were both steadfast at home, managing a family and in public, raise their voices when the times demanded them to be heard.

problem

yolanda he yang is a boston-based artist who reached out to multple aunties to record their stories, and more importantly, their cooking recipes. I was commissioned to design a cookbook as a mean to hold all of their voices together.

solution

cookbooks tend to be overwhelmingly huge both for one’s mental and physical home. I view this opportunity to design something functional, to call out their names, and to give them a proper tribute to their stories and their food.
