since the Vietnam War ended in 1975, many vietnamese americans are left stranded by the idea of home. questions of identity and belonging are both internal and eternal.

problem

thuc has ben searching for ways to connect to his roots. being born here in america, and only come in contact with the bietnamese that left the country after 1975, he often ponders upon what was lost. I’m the only connection he has from Vietnam and he commisioned me to work on a scupture for his space.

solution

monkey bridge is a local transportational delight. it’s famously used throughout the riverlands of south vietnam. known for its ease of construction, but not so much for its safety and stability. i thought it’s the perfect symbolism for the connection that thuc was trying to establish.
